Children with special needs were treated to a grand independence anniversary get together, organized by the Oyo state government to give vulnerable children a sense of belonging and put smiles on their faces.
The event was part of activities marking Nigeria’s 60th independence anniversary.
The colourful event was graced by children from orphanage homes, their caregivers, physically challenged children among others drawn from the geo-political zones of Oyo state.
The wife of the Oyo state governor, Engineer Tamunominini Makinde said October 1 reminds Nigerians about the struggle of past heroes.
‘As we celebrate today’s Independence Day, I would like children with special needs to know that they can be the future heroes or leaders of our country despite their challenges’. she pointed out.
She urged them to aspire high, stressing that their future is bright and their dreams can become reality.
Mrs. Makinde also urged the caregivers to make judicious use of the various items such as foodstuff, toiletries, and cash gifts.
Earlier, the commissioner for women affairs and social inclusion, Alhaja Faosat Sanni, appreciated the governor’s wife for choosing to celebrate with vulnerable children.
She described October 1st as a time to reflect on Nigeria’s past experiences and chart the way forward.
Highlight of the event included presentation from Explicit dancers, dancing competitions, choreography and playlet.
