The Nigerian Union of Teachers, Oyo State wing, has elected new executive members to oversee the affairs of the union for the next four years, with renewed promises to improve teachers’ welfare and uphold professionalism in the education sector.

The election was conducted during the union’s 8th Quadrennial Delegates Conference held in Ibadan on Wednesday, attracting delegates and stakeholders from across the state.

Speaking at the opening session of the conference, the National President of the NUT, Comrade Titus Audu Amba, said the union remained committed to democratic principles and the ideals of organised labour.

Represented by the National Social Secretary, Comrade Titi Ade Adebanjo, the NUT president explained that elections are regularly conducted at the national, state and local levels at the expiration of every tenure to ensure continuity in leadership.

He noted that the election of new officers in Oyo State became necessary following the completion of the tenure of the outgoing executives in May 2026.

Comrade Amba also reaffirmed the union’s determination to continue advocating improved welfare, better working conditions, and enhanced teaching and learning standards across the country.

In his valedictory speech, the outgoing chairman, Comrade Raji Oladimeji Ismael, highlighted major achievements recorded by his administration between 2022 and 2026.

According to him, the union recorded significant progress in teachers’ welfare through prompt payment of salaries, promotion arrears, annual increments, and interventions in pension-related matters.

He added that the union also addressed several cases involving victimisation, wrongful postings, salary stoppages, and labour disputes through its Legal and Welfare Committees.

The outgoing chairman further stated that persistent advocacy by the union led to the recruitment of additional teaching and non-teaching staff, thereby reducing workload pressure, improving teacher-pupil ratios, and enhancing learning outcomes in schools across the state.

He also disclosed that the union organised several capacity-building programmes, mentorship initiatives for young teachers, and training sessions for SWEC members aimed at improving professionalism within the teaching profession.

On infrastructure, Comrade Raji said his administration completed major projects, including the renovation of the State Secretariat, establishment of NUT Model Schools, construction of new classrooms, expansion of the NUT Resource Centre, and development of an Olympic-size sports complex.

Other achievements, according to him, included the reconstruction of the access road leading to the State Secretariat, organisation of state-wide quiz competitions, and production of customised Ankara materials for teachers.

Despite challenges such as rising living costs, inadequate facilities, and insecurity in some communities, he expressed confidence that the foundation laid by his administration would sustain future progress in the union.

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected chairman, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, pledged to work closely with members and stakeholders to reposition the union and strengthen its commitment to teachers’ welfare.

Comrade Hassan, a teacher at Migrant Farmers Primary School, Igbo-Iroko Kishi, also promised to protect the integrity, dignity, and professionalism of the teaching profession in Oyo State.

Other officials elected into the new executive council include Adeleke Adesina as Deputy Chairman, Alonge Oluyemisi as 1st Vice Chairman, Morakinyo Oyebola as 2nd Vice Chairman, and Badmus Abiona as 3rd Vice Chairman.

Others are Bello Folasade, Titilolu Ibukunolu, Dada Kabirat, Akinjide Yusuf, and Ajala Niyi.
